Bosnian Letter Sent to UN

WebPublicaPress (New York) For the second time in recent weeks the Alliance for Peacebuilding’s (AfP) statement at the beginning of November urging decisive action from the U.S. and international community to stem political and ethnic tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

AfP sent a letter signed by 40 NGOs urging U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, USAID Administrator Samantha Power (former U.S. ambassador to UN), and current U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield. AfP asked for immediate action and to act now to prevent violence and conflict and build sustainable peace in Bosnia and throughout the region using all available diplomatic and development tools. You can read the letter here.

Some 40 organizations (AfP included) endorse the letter with the recommendations

which include:

• Calling on the U.S. State Department to use all available diplomatic tools to de-escalate the political and ethnic tensions in BiH and to reinforce support for the Office of High Representative rather than diminish its critical civilian oversight of the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords.
• Urging the U.S. to apply its newly announced enhanced sanctions to reinforce the 2017 targeted sanctions regime against Dodik imposed for his rule of law violations, defiance of the BiH Constitutional Court, and obstruction of the Dayton Accords. The U.S. should work with its European counterparts to institute complimentary sanctions to reinforce their effect.
• Urging the U.S. to encourage NATO to undertake immediate contingency planning, as outlined by the Democratization Policy Council, to address the reconstitution of Bosnian Serb forces in BiH and further threats to the integrity of the BiH state and the implementation of the Dayton Accords, per Annex 1A.
